New Artist Review - Blake McKibben

Haze is the debut release from Oregon musician Blake McKibben, although he’s been involved with music for nearly two decades getting started at the ripe young age of ten when he picked up the saxophone later adding, piano, drums, and bass to his list of musical talents.

The 14 songs that make up Haze are all over the board style wise, you’ll find everything from folk and pop to alternative and rock styles and add on top of that a lot of electronic elements thanks to microKORG synthesizer vocoder that he used during the recording process.

Lyrically the songs deals with normal events of life like relationship problems, death, and the day-to-day grind of work. The release also highlights the better times in life like found on the songs, “Floating,” and “You Lift Me Up,” that deal with when a relationship is working.

The track, “I Wish I Could Thank You,” is a haunting acoustic guitar ballad that deals with death and wishing that you had the person back so you could let them know just how much they meant to you and how much they helped you get through life.

The release also features 2 short instrumental tracks that are driven by their electronic sounds. The first is a 34 second “Intro” that gets things started, personally I think it wasn’t necessary and didn’t bring anything new to the table. The other instrumental song is track-7, “Black Laughter.” This one last for 1:31 and starts out with laughing sounds then quickly is filled with a series of brooding electronic noises.

One thing that Haze can’t get blamed for is being boring or stale, each new songs brings something different to the musical party, be it uplifting and joyful, or sad and somber. I think that this release can best be described as a musical roller coaster ride of human emotions, complete with all of the highs and lows that make up the human experience.
